François-Xavier Roth has been appointed Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of SWR Symphony Orchestra in Stuttgart. He takes up the appointment in the 2025/2026 season for an initial term of five years, leading projects as Designate Chief Conductor from 2024/2025. He will spend 14 weeks each season with the orchestra, conducting subscription concerts in Stuttgart, Freiburg and Mannheim, as well as taking part in national festivals, international tours and the orchestra’s educational projects.
Professor Dr Kai Gniffke, Intendant of SWR said, ‘François-Xavier Roth is exactly the right conductor for our orchestra and SWR. He is not only a gifted musician, but an equally good communicator. He has managed to inspire millions of viewers about classical music on French television. He is passionate about the idea of reaching everyone with classical music, regardless of their social background and character. We will support him with all our means.’
Roth said, ‘I am very honoured to accept the position of Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the SWR Symphonieorchester from 2025. This still young orchestra has a unique DNA: the musicians are extremely experienced and passionate advocates of the music of our time and at the same time approach the repertoire of the last centuries in a historically informed manner – two aspects that are very important to me personally. I look forward to our joint projects and challenges with all their educational, social and media opportunities to create a musical universe for and with our audience.’

Roth is currently General Music Director of the City of Cologne, conducting Gürzenich Orchestra and Cologne Opera, Principal Guest Conductor of London Symphony Orchestra and Artistic Director of the Atelier Lyrique de Tourcoing. He also conducts his own orchestra, Les Siècles, which he founded in 2003, as well as guest conducting leading orchestras around the world.

François-Xavier Roth übernimmt zur Spielzeit 2025/2026 die Position des Chefdirigenten und Künstlerischen Leiters beim SWR Symphonieorchester. Er tritt damit die Nachfolge von Teodor Currentzis an, der seit 2018 an der Spitze des Orchesters steht und diesem auch zukünftig verbunden bleiben soll.
François-Xavier Roth gilt als einer der innovativsten Dirigenten und Programmgestalter auf dem internationalen Parkett. Er ist aktueller Generalmusikdirektor der Stadt Köln, leitet in dieser Funktion das Gürzenich-Orchester und die Oper Köln, ist zudem Erster Gastdirigent des London Symphony Orchestra und steht als Künstlerischer Leiter an der Spitze des Atelier Lyrique de Tourcoing. Sein exzellenter Ruf gründet sich nicht zuletzt auf seine Erfolge mit dem von ihm im Jahr 2003 gegründeten Orchester Les Siècles, ein Ensemble, das Musik aller Epochen auf jeweils entsprechenden historischen Instrumenten interpretiert.
François-Xavier Roths Gastdirigate beschränken sich auf ausgewählte internationale Spitzenorchester und -opernhäuser, darunter die Berliner Philharmoniker, das Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, das Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, das Concertgebouw Orkest Amsterdam, das Boston Symphony Orchestra, das Cleveland Orchestra sowie die Bayerische Staatsoper und die Berliner Staatsoper Unter den Linden. François-Xavier Roths CD-Einspielungen genießen Referenzstatus und sind mit internationalen Preisen dekoriert. Im Jahr 2020 wurde ihm als bis dato jüngstem Künstler der Ehrenpreis des Deutschen Schallplattenpreises verliehen.

Gemeinsame Konzerterlebnisse
François-Xavier Roth war von 2011 bis 2016 Chefdirigent des SWR Sinfonieorchesters Baden-Baden und Freiburg. Im Juli 2020 stand er erstmals am Pult des SWR Symphonieorchesters und dirigierte einen Live-Stream aus der Stuttgarter Liederhalle mit Werken von Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, Edgar Varèse und Béla Bartók. Im Juni dieses Jahres kehrte er im Rahmen der Pfingstfestspiele Baden-Baden ans Pult des SWR Symphonieorchesters zurück und begeisterte mit seinem Dirigat der siebten Sinfonie von Gustav Mahler Publikum, Presse und Orchestermitglieder gleichermaßen.
Vertrag über fünf Jahre
François-Xavier Roth tritt sein Amt zur Saison 2025/2026 an. Sein Vertrag hat eine Laufzeit von fünf Jahren. Pro Spielzeit wird er 14 Wochen mit dem SWR Symphonieorchester arbeiten. Neben Konzertdirigaten im Rahmen von Abonnementkonzerten in Stuttgart, Freiburg und Mannheim wird Roth das SWR Symphonieorchester auch bei den Donaueschinger Musiktagen, den Schwetzinger SWR Festspielen sowie auf nationalen und internationalen Tourneen dirigieren. Zudem wird es sich intensiv Musikvermittlungsprojekten widmen, die sich an Menschen jeglichen Alters richten. In Ergänzung zu Konzertstreams und Aufzeichnungen für Radio und Fernsehen sollen seine Konzerte mit dem SWR Symphonieorchester auch auf physischen Tonträgern wie CD und DVD dokumentiert werden. Bereits in der Spielzeit 2024/2025 wird Roth als designierter Chefdirigent bei mehreren Konzertprojekten am Pult des SWR Symphonieorchesters stehen.
